APPA's Media Release Welcoming the Endorsement of the Australian Curriculum

The Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA) today welcomed the decision by the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs to endorse Australia’s new national curriculum. APPA President, Leonie Trimper, said that today’s endorsement was a historical moment in Australia’s education system: “APPA is delighted with today’s ministerial endorsement. For the first time in our country’s history, we have agreement from all States and Territories and the Federal Government on the subject matter that our schools should teach and that our children should learn.”

Today’s endorsement demonstrates that the States are all committed to a truly national Australian curriculum.

“Today’s announcement shows that State, Territory and Federal Government’s are prepared to work together to ensure we have an effective curriculum. Particularly gratifying is that today’s announcement means that momentum for a national curriculum won’t be lost.”

Ms Trimper said that the decision taken by Ministers to move the implementation timetable of the national curriculum from 1 January 2011 to October 2011 was sensible given that there remained a number of areas where more work is required for some States.

“APPA looks forward to working with State and Federal Ministers and with ACARA around supporting teachers and students alike with the quality resources they need to succeed.”
