The Australian Primary Principal’ Association (APPA) today strongly endorsed the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to the KidsMatter Primary initiative.
KidsMatter provides schools with an over-arching but flexible approach to the mental health and wellbeing of students. It works on its own and as an umbrella under which other existing programs can comfortably fit.

The KidsMatter initiative has been developed jointly by Principals Australia, the Australian Psychological Society, beyondblue, and the Federal Government.
APPA President, Norm Hart, today said that the expansion of the initiative was welcome news for primary schools around the country:
“APPA has strongly endorsed the KidsMatter initiative in Australia’s primary schools. School teachers have found that through the initiative, students at risk have been able to participate more fully in school life, and their academic performance has improved.”
Mr Hart welcomed the Federal Government’s $18.4 million investment in KidsMatter and the expansion of the program from 2011 across Australian primary schools.
“Great schools start with healthy and happy kids. This investment means that primary schools will have more options to help ensure that those students who do need help get the support they need in the school. Free professional development for teachers and schools as well as telephone and online support will give all primary schools across the country access to this valuable initiative.”
The KidsMatter way forward includes proven methods, resources and tools to support and help principals, teachers, parents and the wider community nurture happy, balanced kids.
