Why Use Text Chat in Modern Foreign Languages? - "Text chat via the internet is a form of synchronous communication, meaning that all individuals who are taking part are at a computer and online at the same time. Participants type messages to each other, which everyone in the 'chat room' can read. Text chat does not need much bandwidth, making it an easy form of synchronous communication to set up from a technological point of view. It can be an ideal environment for intermediate and advanced students to develop skills of spontaneous communication in the foreign language. Conversation text can also be copied and pasted into a word-processing document for further work."
