Computer Assisted Literacy at St Joseph's Primary School NSW -

"I am 7 and I like to go shopping.
My birthday is July and I'm am in year 1.
My favourite food is tomato soup and I like skipping.
Please could someone write back to me?"

"This is the text of an e-mail message sent by a Koori student in Year 1 at St Joseph's Primary School in Eden, to a group of Koori students at a primary school in Lakes Entrance. The author, Mary (not her real name), is one of thirteen students in Years K- 6 at St Joseph's who participated in a Computer Assisted Literacy Program. This was managed in 1998 by the Catholic Education Office (CEO) in Canberra, and funded by the Commonwealth Government under the Strategic Results Projects element of the of Indigenous Education Strategic Initiatives Program (IESIP). Mary and her colleagues used lap-top computers that were provided to the school as part of the program to exchange messages with Indigenous students in other schools."
