Community & Family Engagement: Principals Share What Works

Community & Family Engagement: Principals Share What Works - "Principals are increasingly turning to the community to help them engage families, share resources and meet standards. Informed by the work of principals, this paper finds six keys to community engagement that help school leaders engage families, staff, partners and the larger community in the life of the school. The experiences shared with the Coalition for Community Schools, collected from interviews and focus groups conducted for this paper, indicate that principals increasingly rely on partners in the community to address these conditions and to provide all students with the resources and opportunities they deserve. According to Sue Maguire, the principal of Mt. Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, “Our main job is academics, but you have to address the other parts of life at the same time. You can’t do any of this without working with the community.”
